The Christies continued to live in the cave while Ned and Arch recuperated from the wounds received at the hands of Heck Thomas. Ned was up and about before Arch. His face had been disfigured by the bullet from the deputy’s gun, and his right eye had been put out. Other than that, he was all right. His friends had built the wall that Archie Wolf had proposed, but so far it had not been needed. No lawmen came. Ned, as soon as he could manage, began to practice with his guns. The loss of his right eye had effected his depth perception, and he found that he had to start all over as a shootist. He made the adjustment, however, faster than he expected, and soon he was shooting as well as ever before. But he did not smile as much as before. He did not laugh at the jokes his friends told. The scar across his face ran deep. When Arch got up at last, he, too, wore on his face an expression of gloom. Gatey tried for a time to raise the spirits of her two men, but soon she, too, was overcome by darkness. It was as if a dark pall had been spread over the Christie home.

Friends still watched the roads, still brought supplies, but Ned was more concerned with bullets than with food or clothing. In his spare time, which was much, he shot. Then one day he noticed that Arch was getting around much better.

“How is it, son?” he asked.

“Aw,” said Arch. “I’m all right. Almost as good as new. I’ll be ready for them next time.”

“Then let’s go look at our house,” said Ned.
